Now she is coming out with her own vegan book, The Kind Diet.  It comes out October 12th, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it!  Micheal Parrish, founder of ecorazzi, interviews Sylverstone about the book on CrazySexyLife.

Eva Mendes: Fur? I’d Rather Go Naked

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Eva Mendes is not afraid to bare it all in her recent PETA (People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals) Ad to speak out against wearing fur.  In her interview with PETA she mentions that high end designers in the fashion industry are still big on fur.  But, Eva stands her ground, “There are way too many amazing faux fur options out there for people to still be wearing real fur. I want people to know that there are options; that killing a poor animal and wearing it isn’t cool. But respecting all life forms is cool. Very cool.”

Invisible Children

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

I was in college in 2003 when three other college students decided to travel to Uganda during a vicious war to document the story of Ugandan children walking all night long to escape death and abduction into a child soldier’s life.  The film, Invisible Children: Rough Cut, is a horrifying glimpse into the life of refugees in the longest running war in Africa.

If you haven’t seen the film yet, get it today. It’s important to become educated about the things that are going on in the world and participate in change. We are capable of so much if we come together, especially in times of crisis. The Invisible Children organization is inspirational and the story they tell is absolutely heart wrenching.

Click here to read about what is going on with the war today. And browse the Invisible Children site to see how you can become part of what they are doing from bringing child soldiers home to scholarship funds and mentoring to supporting war-torn schools in Uganda.

Let’s choose to step away from our everyday lives for a moment to make an impact on another’s.

Women Roaming the Streets Over 100 Years Ago

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

I am always fascinated by the photographs of the cities a hundred or so years prior to today. Somehow, in the rush of everyday life, we pass by these photos framed on bus stops and inside historic buildings showing street views from the 1800s. I used to live in an amazing, huge brownstone in West Philly- one of those places with a butler’s staircase to the kitchen, and I would find myself daydreaming about women leaving the house wearing over sized hats, cinched corsets, and long heavy skirts. I pictured their husband’s coming home, hopping off their horses, and wiping their muddy boots on those metal scrapers outside the door.

The photograph above is a group of women who became part of the health trend in Philadelphia in the late 1800s. Apparently health was the new craze across the nation (sad to see how little we have evolved in that arena) and women were beginning to play sports they never had. This was years before the AAGPBL plopped on the map- women were playing golf! And you can see by their outfits no one had thought to make something a little more comfy quite yet.

So keep your eyes peeled on these pics throughout your city and be amazed at where we have been…and where we are going. Remember- The Future is in the Past!

Find Your Peace

Friday, December 5th, 2008

I’ve been talking to my wonderful partners, Liza and Free, about meditating for literally YEARS now.  Liza had a rough couple of nights, as usual, unable to sleep and resorting to taking shots of Nyquil (i don’t use it so I don’t know how to spell it lol).  Finally she suggested meditation on her own so we both ventured to The Philadelphia Shambhala Meditation Center.

For those of you Philly people who haven’t been there it’s something to check out.  The first Wednesday of each month the center holds an open house for newcomers to learn about meditation, listen to a speaker, and practice amongst a group.  M-Th at 7pm they have a sitting open to the public.  I usually meditate in my room, but there is definitely a different energy in a group setting.

Find your peace!

Adventures in the Bean

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

So, we’ve been saying how we need to document our lives. It’s time to make it happen. We’re about to get a video camera and digital camera to document our chaotic lives. We have about 5 companies you’ll hear about during our adventures.

So Thursday we had an art event at our store, Denim Society. (By the way, we are Liza and Michelle.) We sell premium denim along with t-shirts, funky jewelry, and art in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia. Our site is being reconstructed, but you can check us out at www.denim-society.com. Thursday began our chaotic week. We ran around getting food and drinks and such for the event. We had a great turn out from 6-9pm with food, drinks, music, and free massages.

Next up we head to Bean Town. We (liza michelle and partner Free) leave for Boston after the event at midnight. We get to Boston at 5am and try to get some rest. The plan is to meet with investors for our company, Vintage Blue on Monday and Tuesday. Vintage Blue is a vintage inspired clothing line. We have the rights to the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) from the movie A League of their Own with Madonna and Tom Hanks. We have samples and a strong team in place- now we’re trying to earn some capital to make it happen!

So, our money guy say they set us up with two BIG investor meetings for Monday and Tuesday. After spending days creating a powerpoint the money men said we needed, Sunday night we sit down in the hotel lobby to go over the presentation. To give you guys a little understanding of how we work- we don’t do conventional presentations. Everything we do is natural, shows our personality and passion. However, Liza was persuaded by the money men to be formal and write notecards-many many many notecards.
We were all arguing that this is not us and how we work. We spend the entire next day practicing. We go into the meeting- only to find out this is a Hot Seat where they critique your presentation. Halfway through the presentaion the notecards get thrown out and the real passion comes through. Everyone loves it- but no real money people are there- our money men say Tuesday is the big night.

So, we head home and work all night long again. Wake up early and prepare all day long. We set up the meeting room with the magazine we created, vintage candy and luggage, our samples, baseball bats and balls. The room looks fantastic.

No one shows up. Well, one person ends up showing up. So, it would be fantastic to get a lead from this. But, we are pissed that we spent so much time and energy to come to Boston from Philly, practice and put ourselves through so much for these supposedly huge investors- to have one person show up. We had to find someone to work our store and also had to cancel our classes. Oh, that’s another thing. We teach a video production class in West Philly through the Beacon program three times a week. Because we aren’t busy enough.

So, we hit the road after the meeting and head back to good old Philly. Get in at 5am and wake up at 10am to head to NYC for Coterie- a tradeshow where we just ordered the hottest new denim for the store. We treated ourself to a lovely dinner at Cafeteria for our troubles. We’re always learning from our experiences. At the end of the day, life is always good.
